These a bit of story that got posted by others during the writing of "BoardQuest" and has been included here for completeness. Joe Powell, when he cobbled the pieces of the story together into the completed textfile, simply ignored them as axtraneous and left them out. Not that I blame him. Part of the text here is an early version of what was to become "Seeing Double," although it got heavily rewritten after this. I have left in place part of the Captain X posts immediately before and after them, so you can see where the pieces fit in. ------------------8<----cut-here-----8<----cut-here-----8<------------------ MESSAGE #43: STILL MORE... Msg left by: SAM JOHNSON [40] Date posted: Mon Jan 14 6:42:37 PM [...] Sam rubbed his throat in pain. "Who are they?" "The pinheads. When the feast ended, we had them running about being a real nuisance, and we had to do something with them." "So the SYSOP made them the castle guard?" "No, he gave them kitchen duty." He motioned towards three pinheads hauling off a large cockroach. "They're preparing lunch right now." [T O B E C O N T I N U E D] MESSAGE #47: LUNCH...? Msg left by: DAGNY TAGGART [25] Date posted: Tue Jan 15 11:43:31 AM "Stop that pinhead!" screamed the Fairy Godmother. "I will not have cockroach served to the people in the castle for lunch. If they want to serve it for themselves, fine (the pinheads will eat anything!)." She turns to Mr. Johnson and says "Sam, you're new around here, so I'll give you a little piece of advice. Don't have anything to do with those pinheads. They're treacherous little bastards, and will turn on you when you least ex- pect it. The Sysop keeps them around to deal with the hackers, but he tries to keep them out of the way of the honest users. You just had the misfortune to fall into a Nonsense pit that developed un-noticed. We've been having a lot of problems with that lately. Apparently the Hex is travelling through a hyperdimensional Nonsense Vortex, since they have become so common. The Sysop is going to have to step up the maintenence patrols to spot them sooner, so they can be marked off." She makes arcane gestures with her hands and is suddenly enveloped in a cloud of orange smoke. When the cloud clears, she is once again visible, seemingly hanging upside down from the ceiling. "Ooops!", she said, and gestured again. This time the cloud of smoke is green, and emanating from the center of it you hear "That's better!". When the smoke clears this time, she has vanished. MESSAGE #49: THE WATCHER FALLS Msg left by: NOMAD LURANG [41] Date posted: Tue Jan 15 1:13:32 PM A young man in white walks down the corridor of the Contributors section. He has been assigned to put a warning by the pit... Watcher is his name, and he is known by two other names as well... He stops by the pit and starts to prop up the sign when several giant roaches erupt from nowher and before he can react force him into the pit! He plummits uncontrollably down into the darkness sreaming all the way. Suddenly he feels himself pulled to one side and finds himself on firm ground. "Hello!" says a strangely familiar voice. "Who are you?" asks the Watcher. "I am your replacement!" says the voice that Watcher suddenly recognises as his own! "WHAT!!" says the great Avenger. "I am the new Nomad Lurang!" says the dark clad figure. He suddenly pushes the Watcher back over the edge to plunge into the realm of nonsence... "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo...!" screams the real Avenger as he plunges into the darkness... MESSAGE #32: SPLOOSH!!!! Msg left by: NOMAD LURANG [41] Date posted: Wed Jan 16 3:21:07 PM With a loud KERPLOSH the great Avenger hit the polka-dotted waters of insanity. As he was pulled towards the wirlpool in the center he desperately struggled against the awesome current but to no avail. As he entered the wirlpool he realised he had to fight insanity as ferociously as he had the current. He began to concentrate on thinking the alphabet backwards.... ....He finally came to shore on the same beach that Sam had been (though at this time he was unaware Sam had been there) after thinking the alphabet three times. The beach was now purple with yellow stars. He climbed out of the polka-dot surf and noticed the strange box that changed colors faster than a slot machine changes suckers. He headed towards it thinking it might afford a way out. At least he might could learn something useful from it. MESSAGE #17: SAM RETURNS AGAIN...
